The Cost of Avoiding Inner Work: Break Free from Survival Mode
The magic you are looking for is
in the work you are Avoiding.
“I do not have problems, you have problems.”
“There are so many problems going on in the world that my problems are nothing to worry about.”
“I have not experienced any major traumas or issues in my life; I have nothing that my body is hanging onto.”
The number of times that I have heard these statements in my practice is far too many to count. What do all of these statements have in common? The focus is on others and not on the self. It is a way of avoiding the work that we need to do for ourselves and instead focus on what we think others need. Yet have you ever thought that the problems that are going on around us, what is catching our attention, could be a sign of the work that needs to be done within?
Our minds are a brilliant thing. They are so brilliant, they keep us from looking within. Our mind will explain away, analyze, or dismiss anything that does not align with the stories it tells us to keep us safe. Our mind is so brilliant, it can keep our focus and attention on other things for years because it is doing a damn good job protecting us from hurt, from overwhelm.
But is it?
Let me ask you…
Do you feel safe in your surroundings?
Do you live with anxiety and/or depression that ebbs and flows, but NEVER goes away or is triggered easily?
Do you feel exhausted by life? Like you are on a hamster wheel, running with no end in sight?
Then your mind is on…it is working…and it is championing for you. However, it may be doing so to the detriment of your mental, and possibly physical, health. At some point, you reach a tipping point. You crash, you become ill (acutely or chronically), you are overmedicated, unheard, and for some, just surviving…trying to make it from one day, one hour, even one minute of the day.
You may think that this is just how things are supposed to be because that is how they have been for years, decades. But what if they aren’t supposed to be this way? What if there is something else that can be done? What if there is a possibility of finding things that bring you joy? Of finding things that are WORTH waking up to everyday? Of finally getting off the hamster wheel of life that you have been on?
If this is resonating with you, welcome!
Welcome to the conversation where YOU get to be heard and seen. Not for the masks you wear or the roles you play, but for who you truly are, without judgement. And in a world that is full of judgement, you maybe rolling your eyes right now. I know because I did the same thing when I started on my journey. But I promise, it is possible. Because at the end of the day, you are HUMAN. That is who I love to see.
